Getting a Basic Understanding of the Flip Video Software by Brandon H Johnston
Unlike most camcorders (and digital gadgets, for that matter), Pure Digital’s Flip Video doesn’t come with a CD installer bundled. Instead, all Flip Video software that you need are stored on the onboard flash storage, which your Mac or PC should identify as a typical external hard disk interface.
There’s no auto-installer for the video software either, so you’ll have to drag it to your local drive and manually run it. Installation should be fast and easy. Make sure to let it install the video codecs (which depends on the model of your Flip device) it needs to process Flip-recorded videos.
Once installed, simply launch the video software as you would any other application, either by choosing it from the menu or clicking on its icon from the desktop or Quick Launch. It defaults to the library view (called “Your Library”) when first run, which is a list of recordings that you have on your computer. The “Camcorder Videos” option, on the other hand, shows the video clips currently in the camera’s storage.
Since the hard disk sees the Flip Video’s flash memory as an external drive, you can easily drag and drop files between folders both on the Flip and on your hard disk. Alternatively, you can also save to both storage devices via the software’s “Save Videos” option.
You can edit videos using the integrated “Movie Mix” feature, although it only works on Windows machines (sorry Mac users). Alternatively, you can import Flip recordings into your preferred video editing software, provided they are compatible with the format. Sharing multiple videos, either via email, greetings or by direct upload to video sites, can also be done through the Flip Video software.
I’ve personally been using the Flip video software for a while now. The install is pretty basic, and it has a nice user interface. After a few minutes of walking through the different areas and options, you should have it all down in no time. You can also search the web or user Windows Media Center as an alternative video solution.
